Military Families Receive Recovery Rebate Break |
The 2008 Heroes Act includes several benefits for military
personnel. The Act was signed into law the last week of May,
so we will include a summary of the provisions affecting individuals
and small businesses in the next bulletin.
However, there is one new benefit that affects tax rebates currently
being distributed by the IRS. Prior to the passage of the new law, a U.S.
Armed Forces member who is married to a foreign spouse who was ineligible
for a Social Security number would not receive a rebate credit if the
couple filed a joint return.

Working Abroad Can Yield Tax-Free Income |
U.S. citizens and resident aliens are taxed on their worldwide
income, whether the person lives inside or outside of the
U.S. However, qualifying U.S. citizens and resident aliens
who live and work abroad may be able to exclude from their
income all or part of their foreign salary or wages, or amounts
received as compensation for their personal services. In addition,
they may also qualify to exclude or deduct certain foreign
housing costs.

Husband and Wife Joint Ventures |
|
Beginning in 2007, a married couple that owns a joint business venture in which
they both participate can elect to file two self-employed business schedules
(Schedule C or Schedule F) on their personal income tax return, dividing the
income and expenses instead of filing a partnership return. However, the IRS has
made it clear that this special provision does not apply to state law entities,
such as general or limited partnerships or limited liability companies. If you
are interested in pursuing this option for 2008 and currently have employees,
are also required to file other types of tax returns, or simply have questions
about this option, please give this office a call.
